Phoenix seems to be able to do nothing with Gretzky as coach. They have enough talent to be in the playoff hunt. They should have been in the mix last season. Why can't Wayne get some more wins out of them?

what he did on the ice as a player, is a total different thing being behind the bench, sure he will maybe some day start to get better results. Wayne Gretzky could play the game and had vision like no other, but will never become a Scotty Bowman just because he had 2800 points in his career. if he doesn't make the playoffs this year he will step aside and find a new coach.

Sean/Guy Wiley>>>>>Phoenix is not in a building stage there an old team they may actually be the oldest team in the NHL Cujo was born in 67 and most of there roster is were born in the early and mid 70's and Gretzky will step down if they don't make the playoffs I'm 90% sure he will.

Maybe some of the players are a little intimidated by him. Ted Nolan said it all when there was a bit of a rift between himself (as coach of Moncton) and Patrick Roy (coach of Quebec Remparts) by saying "just because a person is a good hockey player, doesn't make him a good coach".

Plus, thinking back to the 2002 Olympics - when Pat Quinn was Head Coach of Team Canada and won - in comparison to 2006 - when Gretzky was Head Coach and lost.

Its the old saying.. Great players can't be great coaches. I think that Wayne sees the game being played one way but can't get it accross to the players because they don't see it (The ice, the game, the everything) the way he does. Yes the Yotes are full of talent but, someone needs to be pushing them to their potential. As a Gretzky fan for almost 30yrs., this is the first time I'd have to say let someone else do it. Wayne would probably be better of just G.M.ing and let someone else do the coaching.

You're only as good a chef as the food you have in your kitchen. You have to give a coach 3-4 years to really get "his guys" and "his system" in the works. Expecting dominance is a setup for disappointment in the first year or two of a system. The "Win now" philosophy certainly didn't help the Rangers in the late 90's and early 00's - so give the team a chance to build and grow. I think you'll be happy with the outcome in 2007 or 2008.

your kidding right? Injuries played a huge factor last year and thats all I heard on XM radio a few days ago and Phoenix came out and devestated their opponent (6-2 over Edmonton Thursday night). Phoenix's first problem is the division they play in. Dallas and San Jose are the two premier teams in that division. Second problem is their goaltending cujo is a sever injury risk and they do NOT have anyone that is ready to assume the #1 spot if he goes down. Plus lets not overlook that Wayne was focused on his mother death and the olympics last year.

Its not a failure but they can do better and showed it with that big win against Edmonton.

And I left out up and coming Anaheim as well. Sorry Ducks you guys are good and a lock for the playoffs.

Anyone can comment on how he was a great player and cant identify with the regular players and help them. The bottom line though is until they get sme talent in there, and get rid of most of the useless players on their roster, no one will know whether he is a good coach or not since all coaches need good players to work with, and that includes a rookie goalie who hasnt proved anything.

I wondered how he would do from day one. Great players don't become coaches. Mostly grinders make it as coaches.

Being better than anyone else at the game, it is hard to empathize with what your 3rd and 4th line capabilities are. You just expect them to be good - but is it better than they can be? Then you may be giving them the wrong plays.

Some great players can't coach because they way they played the game came naturally to them and most players have to work at their game to get good. The great ones cannot translate to the average person how to do it like they did.

inexperience, and if he wants to be a head coach he should take a brake and become a teams assistant coach for 2-3 years then try going for head

Honestly, do you think Gretzky is burning the midnight oil, studying game tapes to improve his powerplay ?
