There are many banned or challenged books. It all depends on what you are looking for.

Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress was removed from several school reading lists because of concerns about sex and abortion.

Russell Banks's Rule of the Bone was considered to be inflammatory. It is a cross between Catcher in the Rye and Huckleberry Finn. A fourteen year old boy runs away from an abusive household and takes up with drug selling bikers and a Rastafarian called I-Man.

If you google "Freedom to Read" you will find several lists of books that have been banned or challenged.

And yes, the Bible has also made it onto this list. Look this up to find out why.

A book that is banned today or was banned at one time?

If it doesn't matter.

Both Ulysses and A portrait of the artist as a young man both by James Joyce were banned in France and the US.

Madame Bovary was banned.

The story of the eye was banned (But I don't know if that is suitable for school, or if its suitable for you because I have NO idea how old you are.)

Baudelaire was banned

Of course the Marquis DE Sade was banned

Oscar Wilde was banned

Huxley was banned and Salinger too...

Seems that everything good was banned...

I don't know of anything modern that is presently banned because I don't really read much modern literature.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is one of my most favorite books, but there are a lot of good "Banned Books" out there. The American Library Association keeps track of all those works that people or groups have challenged and have a "Banned Books Week" encouraging everyone to read those that others try to prevent them from accessing. I loved the Alice books by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and a lot from Judy Blume is challenged.

Check out the ALA website for more info on banned books. (I know it is not extremely easy to navigate, though.)

Almost every book that has any literary merit has been banned at some point. Classics that I would recommend are "The Catcher in the Rye", "To Kill A Mockingbird", "The Autobiography of Malcolm X", "Tess of D'Urbervilles", "The Grapes of Wrath"or "Gone with the Wind" . If you want a more contemporary book with an urban theme, try "The Coldest Winter Ever" by Sista Souljah.

Go with Dracula, it was banned from many schools because of the brazen sexuality, Satanic aspects and the fact that it has yet to be proven as a ficticious novel
