The slang term pwn (see pronunciation note below), a term used primarily in the Internet gaming culture, means to soundly defeat an opponent. It is generally used for taunting of a player's in-game enemies, and rubbing in victories.

The etymology of the term pwn is believed to be rooted in a typographical error arising from the close proximity of the 'p' key to the 'o' key on a standard keyboard. Initially — that is, before the term's adoption into the 1337 lexicon — "pwn" was generally parsed as an honest error and pronounced "own." Eventually, as the word took on a life of its own and began to convey a meaning stronger and more specialized than that of "own", its pronunciation began to vary as detailed below.

The term has become ubiquitous in Internet circles and is often used outside of gaming contexts. Its progressive form is "pwning." Its noun form is "pwnage" (or sometimes "pwned" or "pwnt"). An example: "Did you see that guy get pwned?" Appending "zors" creates a humorous portmanteau of the word, e.g. pwnzors.

To be "owned" in the gaming world is to be miserably defeated by an opponent or an opposing team. However, the term "pwned" is usually used when the loser is humiliated in a fair competition.

Y!A is a diverse form of cyber web team, and that i don't be attentive to if i will meet any of you in individual. yet i'm portion of the gay Christian community, have met a lot of my on line pals there in actual existence, and that they've been extraordinarily a lot precisely how they portrayed themselves. i think of that replace into real by way of fact of shared values, faith and adventure. So if so, adult adult males I met at a GCN convention have been a lot as i presumed they may well be, and on line friendships are transforming into IRL friendships. people on Y!A, on the different hand, are a mixed bag. some people i don't think of even exist different than in trolldom. One individual i presumed I knew disappeared unexpectedly. And others look actual and actual. i think of the "question - answer" format would not lend itself to forming real community. That only isn't the suggested purpose of Y!A. and that i echo Enno's concern approximately youthful people assembly persons from on line. they might desire to consistently have a determine or protector with them to make effective they don't meet somebody risky. usual, i think of on line friendships might desire to alter right into a springboard in the direction of actual-existence friendships. now and returned that works, in different situations, not.

to "own" somebody is to dominate, beat, humiliate, or embarass them. it was often used in online FPS games, like counter-strike, etc. however, in the heat of the moment, it often was mistyped "pwned" and then shortened to "pwnd."

(i've heard it pronounced lots of different ways, but i think "poaned" is the most generally accepted.)
