If he was on to something, why was he so bitter toward the end of his life, questioning the bible and poking fun at it - but, then again so do I. Remember he wrote 'The Bible According to Mark Twain'. If he was on to something why at the end of his life did he hate so many people who borrowed and stole from him leaving him near penniless.

And as for deserving honors is great but oft times they don't pay for anything. Which becomes a problem when you are hungry.

As to was he on to something - yesteryear's cigars were very potent and could make the smoker dizzy. And, if Hal Holbrook hadn't played him on stage - most of the modern world would not know of Mark Twain.
