I currently own a Gateway 500S that I had purchased in june of 2003. Last weekend, I purchased a Gateway , 21" wide, flat screen monitor from best buy. To my dissapointment, when I hooked up the monitor to my system, i got sub par graphics. I wound up taking the monitor back to best buy the following evening.

I know I must upgrade the graphics card within my pc. I am currently doing research and trying to determine which will be the best graphics card that will be compatable with my system. Any recommedations? I want to spend anywhere within a range of $200-$300. I am planning on getting the monitor again for christmas.

I suggest you grab a Geforce 7300 GS OC PCI-E 256MB video card.

Reasons:
Cost about $120

It a pretty good video card its still technically low end but can play games like battlefield 2 , Starwars battlefront 2 and the Sims 2 very well on pretty high detail.

It will work with a weaker power supply so you will probably not need to replace your current PSU (power supply unit).

It will produce a lot less heat then most other video cards this will make things run better and last longer in the long run. Plus some more powerful cards might not run well at all if your PC's cooling is not so good. Sadly about 75% of computer cases do not support good enough cooling for more powerful cards.

I know 3 people that have used it including myself in the past and they have had no problems so far.

Now if you are willing to investigate your PSU and or Cooling ability and maybe get a card that is a little or a lot better you can grab a x1600Pro 512MB video card witch should be somewhat better.

Or if you have a good PSU and cooling you can maybe get a $200-$400 higher end card. There are many of these to pick from and I think you should probably stick with the Geforce 7300 unless your very big into gaming.

Message me or post additional details if you need more info.

If your not into Video editing and or Very High end gaming then the Geforce will be more then enough.

And to mention less importantly the Geforce 7300 is easier to install over most over video cards mostly because you will only need to properly seat it. You will not need to run a cord directly from the PSU to operate the card.

This card should be easy to find instores like future shop and staples.

trust me, the bigger the better. ive got a 24" lcd to play call of duty 2 and it rocks. also it seems u dont have a "flat" monitor. i really suggest you to upgrade your monitor, since it is causing a lot of damage to your eyes. if you can afford the change then do it
