Hello, I worked in a bank for 2 years. I recently relocated so I was forced to find a new job. I took a job at what I thought was a nice community bank. Here is the problem- last week I was told I may be supbenad (sp?) to court. I'am responsible for every single deposit I take. So for instance if a customer has had an account with us for years and years and have good account history- if I deposit their checks and a week later the check comes back NSF, the bank DOES NOT take responsibilty for it- I DO. Does not sound right to me at all. Should I quit my job now before I put myself in a sticky situation? Please let me know what you think
=-)

You definitely need some legal advice. I am in the UK, and the free advice agencies that we have here that could help probably wouldn't be very useful to you.

But it sounds as if your employer is working outside of the law, it doesn't sound right. In the UK, financial institutions are heavily regulated, as is employment law. Could you perhaps contact your local political representative for some ideas? Seems like if this is the way they operate, you could be helping people other than yourself, too.

A quick web search on google for "free legal advice" brought up this:

You could also ring or write to the US Dept of Labor, (see http://www.dol.gov/dol/contact/index.htm) to ask them to point you in the right direction.

Anyone can be subpoenaed at any time. Our office sends out subpoenas on a regular basis. Quitting your job won't get you out of being subpoenaed. The party who wants you subpoenaed will find you.

I don't see what deposited checks coming back as NSF has to do with you. Deposits are held until there is a reasonable expectation that they have cleared. All banks have clearing schedules that they hand out that tells you if there is a 1 day hold, a 3 day hold, etc on your deposits. You have no way of knowing if a deposited check is good or not until it hits the bank it is drawn on and they either pay it or return it.
