Myra Hindlay and Ian Brady, are the worst in modern-day British history. Jack the Ripper might might desire to be the worst in previous history, greater so as he became not at all caught! despite the fact that i do no longer disagree with Stalin being the worst yet Hitler became no serial killer, he became a purely a murderous bastard.

It depends on how you judge it really...

Shock value - Jack the Ripper, or Brady/Hindley because of the impact their crimes had on society.
Number of killings - Shipman, but I've heard it argued he gave lots of people the rest they actually wanted, in the comfort of their homes, with a person they trusted...weird, but I see the point.
For the sadistic nature of their crimes - The Wests/Peter Sutcliffe.
You didn't mention Dennis Nilsen, now he was weird.
I have to point out that the Boston Strangler was American (Albert De Salvo)
But I also think the US has seen some of the worst cases...Dahmer, who ate some of his victims, Gacy, killed over 30 boys/young men, the Green River Killer (Gary Ridgway) killed over 50 women (maybe even more)...and there are many more...

Impossible to say who's worst!!

Worst judged by what criteria?
If you mean who killed the most, it may be the green river killer who supposedly killed 48
Some of the answerers don't seem to know what a serial killer is. The one who answered Hitler obviously doesn't, and if Hitler counts, then Stalin would make him look like a choir boy! ;-)

And BTW, it's 'Who was the worst...', not whom.

It has to be Harold Shipman. (By the way since when has Saddam Hussein or Pol Pot ever been associated with serial killing? Whoever said that doesn't have a clue what we're talking about!!!

Denis Rader, the "BTK" serial killer. He is a true sociopath that has absolutely no remorse or empathy for his victims and he admitted to everything. Plus, he targeted families and individuals. He saw no limits in what he did.

Jack the Ripper was credited with the murder of 5 prostitutes, Harold Shipman with 250 of his patients (no contest!)

Probably Vlad the Impaler. Not really a serial killer by today's standards, but in all reality, that is just what he was.

Check any info on a character called Sawney Bean. He was discovered in the Galloway hills with a wife and fair sized family. Trouble was; he and his were cannibals. ( it was though, a few centuries ago.)

There was this very big guy named Edward Kemper killing women when I was living in Santa Cruz.

He killed his grandparents as a child. He picked up hitchhiking women, killed them, chopped up their bodies and dumped them into the river and (as it was later revealed) had sex with their heads, which he kept in a closet.

Then he killed his mother and turned himself in.

He terrorized the community for a good long time.
