8, or -7 is the correct answer
x^2 - x = 56
x^2 - x - 56=0
(x-8)(x+7) = 0

x = 8 or x = -7

8^2 - 8 = 64 - 8 = 56 and
(-7)^2 - (-7) = 49 - (-7) = 56
