I am surprised to read this. Can you post the model numbers of your router & usb adaptor...If they are DG834PN & WPN111 respectively then there is something wrong. I have these & the signal goes through walls & floor with no problem. Have you got the adaptor which Netgear recommends to have best compatibility for the router you have?
Also what channel are you using?...is it channel 11?..this is the recommended one but you can try channel 6 & see if its any better.
PS Sorry, have amended wpn511 to wpn111 which is what I meant to say.
Also WDS makes a very good point ...the USB adaptor does work a bit better with the extender cable than without.

I have a wireless USB adapter from D-Link, and it came with an extender cable and freestanding USB socket so that it could be located a few feet away from the PC. If I don't use the extender cable, I have the same problem you do. If I do use the cable, and then move the USB adapter around to other nearby locations (a trial-and-error, mostly error, process), I can usually get it to work dependably through a wall or two.

Radio signals from this adapter are in the microwave range and are fairly weak ,They are stopped by Metal and hindered considerably by brick .
The channel choice can have also make a difference. I would have considered trying to move the Router to another position as high as possible .
Another alternative is to purchase a wireless network card with an external co ax antenna.Or buy an extender cable for your usb plug.
Failing this you would have to get booster to propagate the signal more.

It could be the wifi adapter is turned off. Click Start, My network Places then View Connections. Click on your Belkin USB to see if it is connected or disabled. Next, could be the PC is just too far from the netgear router. Walls, floors etc cut down on the signal. Finally the Belkin may be dead.

I don't think those adaptors have a very good range. I have one, but my desktop is next to the modem/router. You could get another router - but make sure you get the right one and it will act as a repeater repeating the signal from your adaptor. if you're using it in a laptop - you can get a different adaptor with an aerial on that fits in the PCMCIA port - I think they have a better range. if you have a desktop - get a long RJ11 cable and have your router near your computer. Bits you can get in the sale from Maplin. Their technical guys are good too - same applies to Aria - but watch the P&P with them.

Why not try a signal booster? The signal will be weakened through dense bricks but should go through the ceiling so try the room above the access point. Electrical equipment can interfere.

you need to configure both the pc and the program you installed for that device, go to control panel click on icon that says performance and maintenance,then click on word system,then click on hardware, look for device manager click that word,Now you will see a list of components
in your pc go down the list and look for USB-port right click -properties and see if its working OK,if no it will tell you,then you will have to reinstall it all over again.
