Both teams administrations decided a long time ago to play the rivalry game in a neutral area, rather than in Athens or Gainesville. Jacksonville is a centralized location for both schools, and the town can accomodate the fans for the game.

it is a huge rivalry game and has to be played on neutral ground. Jacksonville is also a bigger city than Athens and gainsville and is able to accommodate the 84,000 people. the people that go to this game tailgate for the whole week and are die hard fans. i think the game has been played there for many, many years and is safer (fight wise) than being played on either one of their home fields.
