pelvic pain

What tests are used to diagnose Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)?
There is no single test to diagnose PCOS. Your doctor will take a medical history, perform a physical exam—possibly including an ultrasound, check your hormone levels, and measure glucose, or sugar levels, in the blood. If you are producing too many male hormones, the doctor will make sure it’s from PCOS. At the physical exam the doctor will want to evaluate the areas of increased hair growth, so try to allow the natural hair growth for a few days before the visit. During a pelvic exam, the ovaries may be enlarged or swollen by the increased number of small cysts. This can be seen more easily by vaginal ultrasound, or screening, to examine the ovaries for cysts and the endometrium. The endometrium is the lining of the uterus. The uterine lining may become thicker if there has not been a regular period.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), also known by the name Stein-Leventhal syndrome, is a hormonal problem that causes women to have a variety of symptoms including:

Irregular or no periods
Acne
Obesity, and
Excess hair growth.
Any of the above symptoms and signs may be absent with the exception of irregular or no periods. All women with PCOS will have irregular or no menses. Women who have PCOS do not regularly ovulate; that is, they do not release an egg every month. This is why they do not have regular periods. No one is quite sure what causes PCOS. However, the ovaries of women with PCOS frequently contain a number of small cysts, hence the name poly (many) cystic ovarian syndrome. A similar number of cysts may occur in women without PCOS. Therefore, the cysts themselves do not seem to be the cause of the problem. A malfunction of the body's blood sugar control system (insulin system) is frequent in women with PCOS. The result is an inadequate response to insulin (insulin resistance) that can lead to abnormally elevated blood sugar (glucose) levels. The insuliin disturbance is thought to also be the trigger for the development of symptoms such as acne and excess hair growth that is seen with PCOS.

There are two ovaries on both sides of the uterus of a woman. There are hundreds of ova in each avary but only less tan 500 ova are grown to full size in woman's life time from the fist menstruashion time to the menopause at the age of fifty or something. The ova are devoloped by the stimulation of hormones gererated in the ovaries. Proper function of the ovaries is blocked by lack enough blood suply to the area or lack of hormones in the thyroid glands or in the adrenal glands that cause stimulation to the hormones in the ovaries. Cyst may be formed in any of the ovaries due to lack of enough blood circulation. Resultantly male hormones in the ovary may become more than female hormone estrogen. It may tend the growth of hairs on the face at chin on upper lips on the breast at the lower leg etc. Again the cyst in the oavry, some times both ovaries may cause pain at each side of the lower abdomen irregular menses periods prolonged periods by nonstop bleeding lack of periods for some months etc.

The fact is most women do not show any symptoms for a very long time. The danger is that PCOS can go from benign cysts and endometrial adhesions to ovarian carcinoma without syptoms.
Ultra sound is one method to check what's happening. The other is to know your risks, and that includes your family history on your mother's side and whether there has been any colon cancer, uterine cancer and breast cancer (mother, grandmother, etc). The other factor is whether you come from a semitic background on your mother's side. And get your RBC panel done because too many red blood cells and too many large red blood cells are known to contibute to PCOS.
Age is also a factor. Women over 60 are more prone to PCOS.
I went to a gynecologist because of my concerns, family history and excessive red blood cell count and blood volume and he booked me in for an oophrectomy which showed I had advanced PCOS which would have shortly converted to ovarian cancer with the damage already done.

I was diagnosed with PCOS about 5 years ago. I first noticed something was wrong when my period lasted for 4 months, non-stop. Since then, my symptoms include male-pattern baldness (thinning, actually), facial hair growth, & irregular menstral cycles, to name a few. If you are noticing anything irregular that is not normal for a typical woman, talk to your doctor. He/she will do blood tests, which will give an exact diagnosis. Hope that helps.

Your best bet is to get an ultrasound. That will confirm if you are polycystic or not. Some people experience cramping and excess bleeding, but an ultrasound would have to confirm.
