You're all wrong - 'meledriot' can only derive from the French word 'melee' meaning hand to hand combat, combined with 'riot', physical aggression by a group or crowd of people.
In other words, a punch up.

It is also one of many words that discriminate against left-handers
"Adroit" Right handed or skilful, hence maladroit "bad right hand"
Compare "Gauche" clumsy in English, left in French
"Sinister" evil in English, Left in Latin.
