First off, you need to be able to take a hit. A prototypical RB is about 5'10" and around 205, can run a 40 in about 4.40. Is strong and has great vision and can maneuver thru small gaps that are called holes. Has to exhibit a tendency not to fumble and best of all must be a diligent worker.

The most importance skills for a running back are acceleration, agility, awarness, and carrying. A good back needs to get out of the back field quickly, bounce to the outside if needed, look for holes in the defense, know where he is on the field, hold on to the ball and not fumble. While speed is usually considered the most important aspect for a running back, it is not. Each player is different, some running backs perfer to run to the ouside, while some backs prefer to power the ball up the middle. So, don't look at speed first, look at acceleration, agility, awarness, and carrying.

the players that are invited after college go to what they call combines which is a week of exams, physical skills, football and mental skills where all the teams go and watch, talk and observe players that are going to be drafted in a few weeks or month after the combine as it is called.. The scouts, GM's player personnel directors all grade players based on these 3 criteria and scored... thats why its not a perfect world b/c you can't measure heart and some players peak at college instead of pro ball... its not an exact science but its a pretty accurate measure of how good of a pro athlete that player might make but again you can't measure heart and desire...

also a good running back is able to follow his blockers, instictively find holes in the line, protect the football from fumbling and be able to escape tacklers. here are a few good running backs: kenny irons of the auburn tigers, ronnie brown of the miami dolphins, carnell williams of the tampa bay buccaneers and warrick dunn of the atlanta falcons
