My suggestion would be an oldish car with a LOOOONG bonnet / "hood" and good airbags in both passenger and driver position - same with a lad.

Reason is simple, if they ARE going to have a few prangs in their life, chances are it will be while they are still learning to drive properly.

A long bonnet means that a lot of other things can absorb the impact of a collision before it comes down to the person actually in the front.

A "nippy short fronted jazzy" car might be a "darling little thing" she will love - it will also deliver the engine onto ther lap if she piles into something at speed. Driving some long nosed car will mean hopefully she just walks out unharmed and throws up from the fright of it all.

As and when she has got a few thousand miles under her belt and has managed to REALLY learn how to drive (as opposed to passing a test) THEN is a great time to buy her the sort of car she would really like - as opposed to one that gives her a fighting chance of survival from a nasty prang.

That first of all depends on your budget.

Secondly, I disagree with the notion that young people should get on old car. Your inexperience means you are more likely to get into an accident. Older cars are more difficult to manoeuvre, which increases your chances of getting into an accident. They also do not have the safety features of a newer car so if you do get into an accident the chances of you getting a serious injury is greater.

I would recommend 2000 year models and up of any small family car. Take it for a test drive to be sure it is in good working order.

This is an old article, even if you have read it, it is worth reading again. http://www.gospelcenterchurch.org/dead17.html

An older used mid-sized like a Malibu with 4 doors, so it is also can be the family "spare car" in case one of your primary vehicles is out of service for a time. Nothing real spendy because YOU pay for the insurance and upkeep. After high school you can buy something nice when she goes off to college. Besides you will have had 2 years to watch her driving habits and how well she has taken care of her car. NO CELLPHONE WHILE DRIVING!! From experience and still paying. Good luck. GH

i would go for a Honda civic, acura, or Camry.. they are good cars very reliable and require very low maintenance which is good cause if your not in to cars or their maintenance you won't damage your car early but your lack of knowledge..no offense it's not a jib at you it's just a common fact girls like me who are totally into cars and their maintenance are very rare...though i would advise which ever you choose do read the manual and how to maintain routine maintenance so that your car will last forever and mechanics won't rip you off. sadly they do pray on women's ignorance.....

really it depends on where you live and the situations. If your looking at a lot of driving...or long distance to and from school...then i suggest something like a Geo Tracker...their smal quiet and get great gas mileage. also they come in four wheel drive for the winter years. if she is a working woman...i would suggest a little for ranger or possibly a mid 90's toyata tocoma...still decent gas mileage and bed space to haul things around. Now if she's a girl that likes style...look for a sprots sedan. not anything fancy but possibly something like a early to mid 90's dodge intrepid or a little honda...still decent gas mileage.

Cheap, nothing you want to keep forever, and it must have airbags. Trust me, I went through that at 16, you will have an accident in the first year.
