Rednecks got their name because farmers who were out in the fields all day would have their necks sunburned. This is also the reason for "farmer's tans".

The term "Redneck" came from the slavery days of long ago. The so called Masters of the slaves that he owned, was the original "Rednecks". As they would sit on horses all day when communicating with the slaves or the watchers of the slaves and at the end of the day the back of the necks would be so red due to the sun. This is where the term "Redneck" really started.

Rednecks reject or resist assimilation into the dominant culture
The word redneck was first cited in Scotland. The National Covenant and The Solemn League and Covenant (a.k.a. Covenanters) signed documents stating that Scotland desired a Presbyterian Church Government, and rejected the Church of England as their official church (no Anglican congregation was ever accepted as the official church in Scotland). What the Covenanters rejected was episcopacy — rule by bishops — the preferred form of church government in England. Many of the Covenanters signed these documents using their own blood, and many in the movement began wearing red pieces of cloth around their neck to signify their position to the public. They were referred to as rednecks
A popular etymology says that the term derives from such individuals having a red neck caused by working outdoors in the sunlight over the course of their lifetime. The effect of decades of direct sunlight on the exposed skin of the back of the neck not only reddens fair skin, but renders it leathery and tough, and typically very wrinkled and spotted by late middle age. Similarly, some historians claim that the term redneck originated in 17th-Century Virginia, because indentured servants were sunburnt while tending plantation crops.

No offence to anyone, but where I grew up, the English were referred to as rednecks, simply because whenever they came there on holiday or to live, they NEVER used Suntan lotion as obviously, the sun used to be such a rare thing to them, they would soak up the rays every day and get burnt to shreds all over, including their necks...

"Redneck" is generally a derogatory term for people from the country who are so called bc they used to work in the fields all day and get sunburn on the backs of their necks. It is now a term associated with a group of people who generally like to hunt, barbeque and have lots of inbred children. As with any description there are exceptions to this!

The archetypal redneck is generally taken to be a Caucasian from the deep South. Their speech exhibits a thick drawl, often rendered even less intelligible by a conspicuous wad of chewing tobacco behind the lower lip. They generally lack any fashion sense, and their physical appearance and mental abilities are such that only generations of incest could achieve. Chosen mode of transportation for most rednecks consists of a "muscle car" or truck with oversize tires, festooned with confederate flags, and featuring bumper stickers that say: "American by birth, Southern by the grace of God". Recently, Ive seen bumper stickers on some of these vehicles that actually say: "Redneck, and proud of it", making identification that much easier. If they ride motorcycles at all, it will invariably be a Harley Davidson. Rednecks tend to be extremely xenophobic, and, fortunately for the rest of us, tend to stick with others of their kind. Heres a short list of other identifiable traits:

Favorite music: Country and Western
Favorite activity: shooting at street signs
Favorite religion: Southern Baptist
Favorite social organization: The KKK
Favorite beer: Coors
Hope that helps.

A redneck is an uneducated (didn't go to college), drives a truck, works for a living, believes gun control is being able to hit your target, has at least one old broke down vehicle in their yard, goes to church, knows how to "trot line" fish, and writes in run-on sentences. Not to be confused with "white trash, or trailer trash".
