I currently live in Europe and work on the net with a US firm. So far they've been fine, paid on time and exactly what they owed me. I hope this stays this way, but - just in case - what do i do if they don't pay me or even bounce the checks?
One thing, of course, is stop working with them, but - how do i get back what i am owed? Do i take them to court here in Europe? Do i take them to court in the US? Is there any way of solving such a situation without court time or travel?
a typical check is around $2500, and traveling back to the US would be very costly.

You'd take them to court in the place where they do business. Most people would not travel, they would just hire a lawyer in that place. It would be expensive.
