It's time travel in a weird sense. What would happen if fate kicked in and you did what you were supposed to do, and didnt make the decision to do what you did because of whatever reason. Had he stayed in bed and gone to sleep, he would have been dead because of the engine. It's like an alternate ending, only the whole movie is that. It's the choices that are made leading up to something that can change your life, and the people that you meet. Everything effects you in some way or another, and in this movie it's like a play on what decisions you make can effect every aspect of your life. So had he been in bed and not sleeping on the golf course, he would be in bed, dead, and everything that happened while he was on his "trip" defined him and what would have happened had he still been a part of this strange world, where anything can happen that you can't control. Then it goes back to the beginning, and what happened was he really died from the jet engine, and nothing else really happened....the mad world was just an alternate universe....

Donnie was involved in a strange deal where he apparently leapt into an alternate universe. Eventually, the events that took place in his life led to try to discover how to turn back time. Over the course of most of the movie, that is what he is trying to do, and in the end, using the info that he collected, he managed to go back in time and stay in his bed, which is where he was supposed to be the first time. This fixed the wormhole thing and none of the bad things happened to his friends or family.

I just took it as a movie about time travel, where the kid goes back in time to save his girlfriend's life. Because if he had been his bedroom the night the jet engine fell through the roof, she would have never gone out with him and gone to the Halloween party and been hit by the car.
But I love that movie.

None of it happened. The whole movie is about what could have happened if Donnie hadn't died.
Watch it again.

It was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I wasn't able to finish it.
