About 6 months ago I twisted my knee really bad, but even though I kept asking her to take me to the doctor to get it checked out, she didn't. It got feeling normal in about 2 weeks, but just recently from increased intense use of it (diving a lot in volleyball, running a 7 minute mile, etc.) It's been popping every time I put weight on it and bend it when running or even just going up the stairs. My mom still doesnt think it's serious enough to take me to the emergency room, and she didn't get an appointment to get it x-rayed for another 4 days. I've been wearing an ACE bandage on it for extra support, and when I woke up this morning my whole leg from my knee down was swollen. What do you think is wrong?I'm not wearing the ACE bandage any more, but do you have any advice?

Give this to your mom: It sounds like your daughter has a miniscus tear in her ligiment. This will only get worse if not treated. It might be just a pulled legament, but why chance it? The ace bandage is too tight and the swelling is from the blood pooling on the leg and not circulating well. Let her take antiflammatories, like Motrin or Aleve or Aspirin with food to relieve the pain and inflammation. Keep the leg elevated while sleeping with pillows; even ice packs might help. Be sure to wrap them in a towel so you don't freeze the skin around the painful area. And please take her to an orthopedic doctor. Xray won't do it. She will need an MRI. This is a painful situation. Godloveya both.

What it sounds like is that you sprained you knee pretty bad, it happens a lot. Ice is always good. Use ibuprofen for pain and swelling. The pop is unknown to me but I have it often with injuries. You should not worry about it unless the popping hurts or is bothersome. Always use the Ace bandage for support when doing sports or walking. It is a safe support. But give it time to heal properly. If your knee still bothers you with pain let your mom know and have it checked out by a specialist.
Hope some of this helps. Good luck and take care.

Same exact thing happened to me. You probably caused your knee cap (patella) to slid off to the side and then go back into place. It's pretty painful. You should get xrays to make sure there is no other damage to your bones. Anyways, when the knee cap slides back into place, there is usually a little build up of blood and water (which is why it was swollen). You need to ice it a few times a day. Also, you should do some strengthening exercises to make the muscles next to your knee strong again. By the way, this is a very common injury for girls and women because the muscle on the inside of our knees are usually not very strong so it is easy for the knee cap to pop out of place with the wrong step.

You need to see an orthopedic doctor. Swelling is indeed indication that something is wrong. Until you see the doctor, keep your leg elevated when sitting and as much as you can. What does your school nurse or coach say?

Your knee definitely will not be broken and a regular x-ray will show nothing. During your first injury, you probably did some damage that will cause reoccuring problems. Conservative treatment will be best. You might not be able to do strenuous exercise.
