Also, I'm wondering if anyone knows when the town of Rothenburg puts up its Christmas tree. We're considering a trip to Germany in early or mid-November.

yes, I will send you a really nice website...I have used! I have been to Rothenburg on Xmas several times...the whole city is decorated for Christmas!

The Christmas markets will be opening so Nov. 27. In Germany is the Christmas on 24. so 4 Sundays before (they are counting 1 until 4 Advent) right before the Markets opening.
Enjoy your trip in this time is in Germany very nice.

Berlin's Chrismas market is supposed to be opened from the mid of november on. Greetings from Düsseldorf, Germany - forget about the Leipzig Christmas market (the one Fabian mentioned). Leipzig is in the ugly eastern part of Germany (former communist part) and you won't really like it.
