There are lots of occasions when a home pregnancy test (hpt) will show a negative when you are really pregnant. However, there are few, if any, things that will cause a false positive, so you can be 99.9% sure that if it says you're pregnant, you actually are. Being on your period or spotting should not affect an hpt.

There are a few things that can cause a home pregnancy test to be positive including some hormonal disorders, thyroid problems, and some prescription hormones. Though not as common as a false negative, which can occur if there is not yet enough hcg in your urine, a false positive can occur. As for spotting or bleeding, those things are also possible during pregnancy but can be dangerous so if you have any suspicion of being pregnant, check with your doctor.

If a test says positive you are definitely or were pregnant. Some bleeding is normal in the early stages of pregnancy. Bleeding with clots, bright red in color, and severe cramping could be a miscarriage. I would suggest getting to a doctor or a clinic as soon as possible so they can further assess if you are pregnant or are having a miscarriage. Good Luck, hope all goes well.

No. Menstrual bleeding does not cause false positives.
The home pregnancy test detects only the presence of hcg, a hormone your body creates only when you are pregnant.

So if you have a positive hpt, you are pregnant.
