PLEASE purchase the "Ferrets for Dummies" book by Kim Schilling. It is an invaluable resource. And yes, your ferret should be seeing the vet annually for a check-up and vaccinations. Don't introduce him to new kits without quarentine. I rushed introducing my group to a new kit once and two of my guys came down with ECE (green slime disease). It took meds twice a day and some TLC to help them recover. As your ferret ages he will be more prone to things such as adrenal gland disease and insulinoma so you need to learn what to look for. ADV is a very serious disease that you should also learn about.
I would like to invite you to join a wonderful community of ferret lovers at Everything Ferret forums: http://www.everythingfert.proboards36.com/ . You'll love it there and learn tons about your fuzzbutt.

These are questions you should have researched BEFORE you got your ferret & any good ferret owner will tell you that ! Yes, they can get sick just like any other animal. Vet exams are expensive and when they do get sick it's usually cancer, or a sugar problem, or Adrenal (which is VERY common). You need to research those diseases a.s.a.p. because ferrets do NOT have a long lifespan !

Ferrets are the only animals that can catch viruses from humans. Look on google for ferret care pages.

yes they can get sick, they can catch cold very easily, when you or anyone in your house are sick, try to avoid them as much as possible. when my guys get sick with a cold i make sure they have stage 2 baby food chicken or turkey flavor, and also ferret medicine that is like vicks, of course you need to watch them for any resportory distress or diarrhea or constipation, make sure they are free from drafts and give them ferret vitamins all the time especially when sick, dont give milk or milk products,

Mine had some kind of adrenal disease, poor little guy. His fur fell out and then he died. I was sooooooo upset. He never got sick, like a cold, though.
