In order to ge rid of all the old stuff on my hard disk and to run a clean re-install of Windows 2000, I tried to format my hard disk (C:) fom partition D: and alternatively from a boot disk (A: format C:). However, I get the message that the volume is used by another process and cannot be formatted...

you have to start in dos and enter the command prompt. you can not be inside windows to format a harddrive.

That is probably because the OS is installed on it! Just place the Windows disk and perform a clean installation. There will be a prompt which will tell you where you would like to install the OS and to remove the existing partion hence the disk will get formated and the OS will install.

boot with your windows 2000 disk and format to ntfs. the disk will do the rest

Start your computer and press either F5 or F8 and one ot the other will give you a clean C prompt. Add text to give the line c:/format*.* and press enter. I think you are getting a conflict because you have no clean C prompt, like C:/win, or something similar.

did you boot from the floppy? go into bios and select 1st boot device floppy 3 1/2

put the 2000 disc in and follow the prompts one of them beleive it or not lets you format the hdd

i use a 98 boot disk and delete all partitions re boot and create another partition, boot and reformat.

GO TO CMOS PRESS ON START UP EITHER F1 OR F2 DEPENDING ON COMPUTER.
CHANGE THE BOOT ORDER FROM FLOPPY,CDROM,IDE TO CDROM,IDE,FLOPPY .SAVE AND EXIT
INSERT WIN 2000 DISK AND BOOT FROM CD WHEN IT ASKS YOU TO FORMAT CLICK YES AND THIS SHOULD DO IT AUTOMATICALLY.
WHEN FINISHED BACK INTO CMOS AND AGAIN CHANGE THE BOOT ORDER TO IDE CDROM FLOPPY SAVE AND EXIT AND YOUR AWAY.
