If a base runner gets on with an error and he scores later, that is an unearned run; not the pitchers fault that he reached base. That is true even if the pitcher himself makes the error, it does not count against his pitching statistics.

If a runner gets on base any time during the inning, and there are subsequent plays made that would have been the third out of the inning if not for the error, all following runs are unearned runs.

Example, the first two players strikeout. The third batter reaches base due to a defensive error. Batters 4, 5. and 6 of the inning then hit home runs all four runs are unearned. The error on the third batter would have been the third out; the pitcher is only expected to get three outs in the inning. The home runs count against his total for hits and home runs given up but do not count for earned runs against his ERA.

An unearned run is a run that would not have scored in a particular half inning if it had not been for an error. (I believe) with two outs if a runner reaches base, any and ALL runs allowed in the remainder of that half inning are unearned.

PS... s t's answer isn't necessarily true as some errors do not lead to a run or more runs...such as a throwing error which would only allow the runner to advance a base or two. A homerun following such an error would not contribute to an unearned run.

when a person on the field makes an error, and the man gets on base, and later in the inning, if the guy who reached base on the error scores a run, it is considered an unearned run because it's not the pitchers fault. If the pitcher is giving up hits, and there are no errors made, thats an earned run, because it is the pitchers fault
