According to BabyCenter, women who are 45 years old have a 5 percent chance of becoming pregnant after one year of trying to conceive, compared to a 20 year old female's 86 percent chance of becoming pregnant within one year of TTC.

At age 50, a woman has a zero percent chance of becoming pregnant, according to BabyCenter.

Researchers have found that female fertility decreases with age, and conceiving a child naturally after age 45 is extremely rare. In addition, in vitro fertilization treatments are rarely successful in women over 45.

Women's fertility is thought to decline with age due to both decreased quantity and quality of eggs.

However, researchers have found that some women's genetics make them more likely to be fertile late in life. In other words, if your Mom, Aunt, sister or other female relative was fertile in her forties, then you stand a much better chance of getting pregnant.

Your chances of having a baby with down's syndrome or some other genetic mutation that causes mental retardation are unfortunately very, very high at age 47, at least one in 25, and possibly much higher. So you would need amniocentesis to rule out such a problem.

And if your partner is over 40 years old, keep in mind that your chance of having a baby with autism is six times greater than if your partner was younger than 40.

Well, I must be that freak of nature. My first child was born when I was 37. Since I got with my second husband at 42 I've now gotten pregnant 4 times in 5 1/2 years. I had a son at 43. Miscarried at 44. A daughter at 45 and now at 47 I just discovered that I am pregnant again. No fertility drugs or treatments. I've had c-sections with all and my OB says that my womb looks like it's in its 20s. I wished I looked 20. Unfortanetly birth control is not designed for the fertile few over 40...so it looks like I get my tubes tied during the next c-section. I don't want to be the oldest woman to ever conceive and bear a child. The husband is 54 and no autism just really really bright kids.

I have five aunts, both of my grandmas, and my great-grandmother who all got pregnant in their 40's, some had even gone through menopause believe it or not. I would say your chances are pretty high to get pregnant, but the risks of down's syndrome is also greatly increased. One of my aunt's baby had the disease unfortunately.

My husband's mother had him when she was 43. The odds are fifty fifty if you have not gone through the menopause.
