They lived in palaces, which were almost always made out of mud brick because they were not intended to last forever. Tombs and temples (except earlier temples) were made of stone because they were intended to last.
Only a couple of stone palaces have been found, one is called Malkata and is near Thebes (modern Luxor), but there isn't anything left there for you to go see. Another is the palace of king Merenptah from Memphis, part of which is now in Philadelphia in the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.
Through most of ancient Egyptian history, the usual capital city was Memphis (near modern Cairo), but sometimes Thebes was the capital. During the Amarna Period, the capital was moved to Amarna for less than 20 years. During the Middle Kingdom, the capital was moved to a city called Itj-tawy (seizer of the two lands), which has not been located, but is probably on the north side of the mouth of the Fayyum Oasis. In later periods (Late New Kingdom through Ptolemaic), the capital tended to move around to different cities in the Nile Delta.
Hope that helps.
