Mail, e-mail, and calls when he is inport somewhere. I retired from the Navy 7 years ago and when I made my last deployment we were lucky to have mail call once a week. And to think they actually have e-mail access on board. But the question I have is why would "they give him a calling card or something". He's a big boy and can buy his own, They....The Navy is not a babysitting service to coddle the sailors. Think about the vets of WW2 who had to wait weeks if not months for a single letter. Consider yourself lucky with the e-mails. Good luck and I hope you all get through his deployment OK.
Good luck

Even though he will be able to call you the primary source he will be able to use more with will be email because it's just better and safer. He will be able to call you once in a while but he will be limited on what to say or talk to you about because if he or someone else on board says something they shouldn't have said the phone lines and computer lines will be shut down and they won't be able to communicate through email or by phone for awhile.

hey, when I was in the Navy, it was all ship-to-shore calls and mail. calling cards are cool for inport, and email rocks. it's not the same as having them home, but it's better than what it was.

they might shout for the time of "Pedro Lopez fell overboard and is lost". The call Pedro Lopez would not talk over with somebody or persons, residing or lifeless and is used strictly as an occasion.
