I'll explain the difference between a flute and a recorder...

With a recorder the air sound stream is made for you. You just blow into pre shaped mouthpiece and a sound is produced.

With a flute it is you who are actually a part of the mouthpiece because you make the shape of the airstream. You make the airstream with your lips and you direct it onto a precise spot on the blowing edge. You could say you are part of the flute itself. Can you see the difference?

If I'm not to badly mistaken; The Recorder was a Renaissance instrument. Flute-like but producing a lower tone. From what I've seen it appears to take a lot of 'wind'. It is blown in with slow, even breaths with no instrument 'back-pressure'. Blowing hard produces nothing. If you are old enough you may remember the 'Tonette' from elementary music class. That's close but it had instrument back-pressure due to the small blow-hole. The Recorder is wide open at the blow hole. I'm assuming that you're comparing the the Recorder with the straight 'pipers' flute not the Woodwind Family side-held flute or piccolo.

No, a recorder can be a wooden or a plastic piece, based on various ethnic instruments on which you control the sound by placing your fingers directly on the soundholes; on a flute, a larger, orchestral instrument (in fact, there are several different types of flutes), there is a mechanism for controlling the sound. The sounds of the two instruments are different, too, and flute is much more expressive in terms of different techniquues you can use and different sounds you can produce.

They are related instruments, and of the oldest musical instruments made by man. A recorder is generally made of wood (not plastic...that's more of a toy) and orchestral flutes are often silver-plated metals. Read about both here:

The flute is considereably more difficult to play (and learn) than the recorder.

a recorder is plastic and you can probably buy one for 10 bucks

a flute is an orchestral instrument, much classier/more expensive
