Hello,

I too was shy when I was in Elementary and High School.

Even in college, I was a Social Science Major and all I did was give speeches. I had no idea I would have to speak so much in front of my classmates. It did scare me, but I kinda got over it. I mean, if I wanted that "A" in the class, I had to get past my fear of speaking. And, trust me, I am not a good speaker, talker, as it is. I tend to studder and my words jumble together. I am better at writing than speaking.

You know what, the older I did get, the shyness I once had dissipated. I have no fear anymore of speaking and I am a much bolder woman today. Plus, being a Mommy of Twins tends to bring out the extrovert in me..

Do you practice in front of a mirror or your family? That too will help. Oh, and record yourself speaking..

I hope this helps you...................... :-)

I too am a very shy person and public speaking is one of my largest fears! My suggestion for your speech is to study your material over and over until your comfortable with it. Try practicing it in front of a mirror, your parents, friends, and other relatives.

In the long run, practice makes perfect. Once I got into college, I started joining different clubs and running for offices. I'm still not the best public speaker - but I can do it without coming close to passing out now.

Good luck. I'm sure you'll do fine. Just practice, practice, practice.

Hey Missy, As far as the speech goes, just concentrate on knowing what you want to say and how you want to say it. Practice giving the speech to yourself until you know it well. Speaking in front of people is hard for everybody.
As far as shyness in general, find things to do that make you more confident in yourself. Ropes courses are excellent. Rock climbing is great because it makes you confront natural fears of heights and falling. Anything you can do to challenge yourself is great. Just be careful and don't go all adrenalin junkie! lol

Do the old "imagine them in their underwear".

Or think that YOU are the presenter, not them. You are in charge. Take control and give the speech with confidence.

The key to a speech is to get the teacher (or even just the class) to buy into your speech or argument you are presenting.

cliched, but it works
picture the audience in their underwear, or any other way to make them look non-threatening, like bunny ears or something. Make sure you know your speech well so you dont stumble, and maybe tell a joke first. I dont know about you, but when my jokes are laughed at, i feel GREAT so just tell a joke or get a hug from your friends and make sure you feel good!
okay, im done with my cliched little answer
knock 'em dead!

I would practice in front of a mirror. That way, you can tell how you look, and what to do to improve. If nothing else, you can alway just look at the one person you know in the crowd!!!

a good way for shy people to get over shyness is instead of looking everyone in the eye look at their foreheads or their hair when talking to them..

Instead of focusing on the people in front of you... be proud of yourself and your accomplishments. I am sure you are very capable of this task and will do great.

Yes, just remember this, if you have no faith in yourself, how can anyone have faith in what you say and do. If you believe that you can do something, the battle is already half won, but if you believe you can't do something, you have already lost.
