Ask questions...people like to talk about themselves. And, yes, listen to what the person has to say, and then ask more questions about what they said (if possible) to show that you are really interested. that will help keep the conversation flowing.

look up "useless facts" on the web, and just start spitting out random useless facts at the person. that should eventuall get some conversation going.
plus, its fun to catch them off guard.

Don't just talk about yourself. Ask questions about the other person's life, and occasionally give details that relate your life to theirs in some way. Leave room for them to ask questions about you, and when they do, answer with basic details. Go deeper if they ask further.
