He apparently wanted to leave; he still had a year on his contract but they allowed him to go to the Giants...the Padres didn't get rid of him, he left voluntarily. I think this will turn out badly for both teams - I can't see Bochy getting along well with Peter Magowan, and I doubt the Padres will find someone better to mange them next season.

Here is part of an article:

Bochy left his 12-year job as Padres manager with a year remaining on his contract because he was suspicious of Alderson and felt his Moneyball-tinged regime was out to limit his authority. Alderson, meanwhile, did nothing to prevent Bochy from bolting to the division-rival Giants because he saw Bochy as stubbornly resistant to new ideas and a possible impediment to development of young talent.

The Padres didn't "give up" Bochy, and Bochy was not fired. please don't have any misconceptions about this. Bochy was free to look into other managerial jobs, he was searching for a more stable CONTRACT, since he only had one more year with us (the Padres). it wasn't about the money, or him not being happy here. all he wanted was a stable job contract, because it didn't seem likely we would renew his contract after this year.

Well, his teams have been up and down since he took the reigns. The Padres may be looking for a more stable manager like Joe Girardi

There are times that a good manager reaches the limit of effectiveness. The players have heard it all before. That is true not just in sports, but in business as well. It is easier to replace the boss rather than the entire team or staff.
