Ive got a DVD burner to install in my computer. My comp came with a cd burner. I know how to hook them up together. But wondering which drive should be master and which should be slave? And does it matter which is which? What does it do?

OK, Nevermind the rest of these answers.
The only thing you would need to worry about the master/slave config is with the **DVD PLAYER** part of the DVD burner.
It needs DMA to play DVDs at the best speed.
DVD players are ALWAYS set to master. You cant set a slave device to Direct Memory Access.
So put the DVD as MASTER and the CD as slave.
There should be a popup question that comes up when you install the dvd saying "Do you want to activate DMA"? say yes.
Good luck.

I'd go the other way ie dvd as master and cd as slave just because I consider the dvd to be superior however it really doesn't matter.

the drives shouldnt be on the same cable, since this can cause data transfer problems, it should look like this ide1 -->master hard drive --> cdrw drive
ide2 --> master dvd writer.
