In my opinion, the answer should be, "Yes."
The reduction in spending that would be required, in order to reduce the national debt, would almost certainly cause a recession in the USA. The Federal Government borrowed an additional $620 billion, last year, regardless of what the President says about the "reduced" Federal deficit. Given that enormous amount of borrowing, the Government would have to reduce spending by at least a trillion dollars a year, if it were to make any sort of serious dent in the national debt. That means a trillion dollars' worth of goods and services WON'T be bought by the Government. The people who make those goods and services would lose a lot of business. People would be laid off. The economy would shrink. It would be a recession, and a serious one, at that.
However, enduring this recession would be worth it. Debt equals slavery. If the United States is going to remain free, we have to be able to pay our bills. The current size of the debt is more than $27,000 for every man, woman, and child in the country. And the debt is currently on track to grow to EIGHT TIMES THAT SIZE, over the next 15 to 20 years. If we don't start paying it off, and soon, we'll be enslaved to our creditors, slaving away all day, every day, just to make the minimum payment. If we don't start paying our debt, our days as a great power are numbered.

Yes, the national debt is a burden on our children and grand children. The American people should be willing to pay today for the benefits they demand today. I think you would see much less demand on government if today's population had to pay for today's benefits.

ONLY IF we want our children to HAVE an America to grow up in.
But then again, the guys in power think they're going to come out on top of the dung-heap so they probably aren't worrying about it at all.
