I had the same problems with my non-wireless controller. Sometimes, the malfunction of the controller is caused by a hindered connection between the controller and the X-Box. In this case, I tried plugging the controller into a different port. If this didn't work, I'd sort of gently rotate the wire around the joint area of the wire and the controller. Sometimes, the controller would only work if I held it at a certain angle, the angle at which the connection flowed best. To figure out which position, you'll probably have to experiment a bit.

As for wireless controllers, try changing the batteries or pressing the button on top of the receptor.

Worst comes to worst, just buy a new one, a wireless one if you didn't already have one.

I presume that you are talking about the original Xbox, right? And a wired controller, right? I say, you have nothing to lose and try to fix it by yourself. There is nothing worse that could happen if you were to open it up. If it is a matter of sticky buttons or buttons not responding quickly, then it is something that could probably be fixed by yourself...as long as you have some patience and no fear of all things electrical.

First off, find a clean and clear place to open the controller up. You will need to find a needle-nosed screwdriver to open the controller up....and then just some good memory or organization where things go once you open them up. I would suggest having some rubbing alcohol and warm water...to clean around the buttons and the plastic.

Obviously, if any of this seems too foreign for you...then simply buy another one. You can often find an affordable controller at your local Toys R Us at clearance prices, or a preowned one at EbGames/Gamestop. Best of luck.
