If you want to “bulk up” your legs maybe you should try some strength training. Doing cardio machines like the elliptical well help you burn calories and increase your leg strength to a point, but won’t do much to help you gain much bulk in you legs. If your goal is to gain muscle, your gong to need a lot more weight than what the elliptical has, for muscle gain use enough weight that you can ONLY complete 6-8 repetitions and 3+sets, resting for 1-2 minutes between sets and 3 or more days between sessions. For beginners, give yourself several weeks of conditioning before you tackle weight training with this degree of difficulty. You may need a spotter for many exercises. Exercises like the elliptical, running, and swimming give a lot of repetition, but not much weight or tension. They help your muscle grow long and build endurance, but they don’t help them get bigger. That’s way most swimmer and runner have lean fit bodies, but football players and weight lifter have big muscles.

Talk to one of the personal trainers at the gym. He or she can tell you which non-cardio machines to use in order to get the definition that you want. They will also show you the proper way to use the equipment so that you won't injure yourself.

What you are doing is building muscle mass so they will feel much bigger. Don't increase the tension if you want to burn calories only. Get off the one that looks like skiis and use the one the eliptical.

fat makes your leg bulky. Anything that helps you lose fat will make your legs slim.
