What is the difference between tights, stockings, leggings, and pantihose?

Leggings are like pants (they do not have feet like pantihose), and are usually the thickest out of all the things you listed. Leggings are wearable without anything on top (very 80s and 90s) but are often paired with a miniskirt or short dress on top to make the outfit more G-rated. They come in all colors, but mostly black and gray.

Stockings are longer, more formal versions of socks. Usually worn with dress pants. They are usually black or navy blue, and are sometimes referred to as dress socks.

Pantihose are worn under a dress or skirt for formal occasions. They are usually nude colored (so you cannot really tell they are there) and are much sheerer than tights. You can get black pantihose.

Tights are more opaque versions of pantihose, and come in assorted colors. They are for little girls usually, and for less formal occasions.

Hope this helped!

Are you a dad? The reason I ask is that most moms know the difference, being that they are female.

Anyway, if you go to a store like JC Penney or another big store like that...even Khol's...a sales lady should be able to help you. Just make sure (if you are in the US) that you get a sales lady who speaks good English. If you get a foreigner they might not understand the subtle differences. No offense to foreign people but they don't always understand what is being asked.

Anyway, tights are usually pretty colorful and are very stretchy but not very thick. They are a nylon-y material. They come in all colors: white, red, pink, orange, blue, yellow, brown. They can also be multi-colored.

Stockings are more like what women used to wear. They generally come to mid thigh. Little girls don't usually wear stockings.

Leggings are more of a cotton-y fabric blend. Thicker than tights and less stretchy and shiny looking. But thinner than panty-hose. Leggings usually don't have feet in them. They end at the ankle generally. Some people also call snow-pants leggings.

Panty-hose are like a nylon material and they are thin. They are sheer looking, usually women, not girls, wear them. They come in shades like nude, buff, tan, black, cream...and they are not solid looking, but rather see-thru.

Pantyhose are made from nylon and are usually very sheer. Tights are thicker, sometimes made from a blend or even out of cotton. You can find them somewhat sheer, or even opaque. Stockings are something that doesn't have a panty (i.e. thigh highs) and can be a variety of materials/thickness. Leggings are more like pants (remember spandex?) very fitted, skin tight, but made from cotton or a cotton/spandex, etc blend. They are totally opaque, and offer the most coverage of all three (and can be worn alone, instead of under clothing)
