always divide by the smallest prime factor (2) once the number can't be divided by 2 go to the next prime factor (3). Then 5 then 7,11,13 so 27 is 3x3x3. Because 27 is not divisible by 2 you must then procede to the next prime number (3).

write your problems like this and prime factorization will be easy. Remember to keep dividing by prime factors
until you are left with nothing but prime factors.
40 divided by 2 is 20 so your first number in your answer is 2

20 divided by 2 is 10 so your answer so far is 2x2

10 is divided by 2 again so the answer so far is 2x2x2

you are left with 5 is this a prime number? yes so your answer is 2x2x2x5 now use your calculator and enter 2x2x2x5 what did you get.......that's how you check your answer.

THIS IS SO EASY JUST TRY IT OUT FOR THE REST OF THEM ON YOUR OWN. YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS TO PROGRESS AND DO GOOD LATER IN ALGEBRA.

Once you understand how to do it you can do the work yourself, which you need to do in order to grasp the basic ideas and pass the course. :-)

Divide successively by the smallest prime number until it will no longer go into the remaining number - then proceed to the next larger prime number.

2 will not go exactly into 27, but 3 will

27
/ \
3 9
. ./ \
. .3 3

So the prime factors of 27 are 3, 3, 3.

42
/ \
2 21
. / \
.3. 7

Prime factors of 42 are 2, 3, 7

Any "." in the diagram is to force horizontal allignment, which Yahoo doesn't handle well for math.

Express each as a product of primes.

27 = 3^3

etc.
