Its called black eye. It helps reduce the glare of the sun and lights in sports.

black absorbes all colors of light..red, blue, green, yellow and w.e else
it is below the eyes...
so the light is directed towards the black strips instead of the football players eyes
everyone likes it...
almost all football players wear it just to be "in" or cool but it really does help w. the sun and lights

the black lines under the eyes absorb the sun light so its not getting in thier eyes.

It deflects the lights of the stadium, the sun and keeps the flash bulbs from cameras from blinding them. The reason they wear visors is to keep fingers out of there eyes.

It's a gang related thing. If they wear the eye black it means they have killed someone when they were in their gang. Sometimes there is writing on it. That's the name of a homey they had that was killed from their gang.
