Whenever someone says to me things like "You're pretty", "You're beautiful", or "You're gorgeous", it does nothing for me at all. Now, I don't consider myself ugly or anything like that. It's just that I much prefer to hear things like "You're smart" or "You did a good job on that project." To me a real, true compliment is what you do or are about. Is it normal for me to feel this way? And how do I encourage the do-and-about compliments without hurting the other's feelings?

It's nice that you get called "pretty" and "beautiful" and stuff.. which no doubt you probaly are! but i have to agree with you, i would much rather be called "amazing" or "intelligent". looks will get you nowhere in life, it is the person you are that makes a difference. its completely normal for you to feel this way, in my opinion :)

I agree with you but I do not mind being called pretty or beautiful or gorgeous. I mean I would really like to be called smart or maybe even a pat on the back for a good project. You are just fine and normal.

It must go with the name. I had the same problem when I was a teen. Just thank the person and let it go. Don't worry about being smart or doing a good job, just do it.

Many be you could say "thank you I'm happy with what my parents gave me ,but I would much rather people took notice of my own efforts and accomplishments"

I'm sorry to say most people will value your looks more than your goodness. Try not to sweat what other people do and keep on being real

You are not vain, unlike most people. But, you shouldn't try to encourage or discourage compliments of any particular kind, because that's being too needy.

I feel the same. I don't care if I'm pretty. I'd rather be a person with depth.

proof positive that it's only important what you think about yourself.
Yes that's normal, things you do are a better barometer of self-worth than looks, which you really can't do anything about.
