My brother and I loved being zombies as teenagers....we used a 'paste' made from simply with flour and water and green food color. We made a medium consistancy and applied it to our faces (thicker if you need) and let it dry all lumpy, we dripped a bit of extra green food color around our eye sockets for 'pus'. we teased and greased our hair and tore our clothes. As the night wore on, the 'spackle' on our faces got warm and bit and chuncks slipped off....one lady screamed when a chunk of my brothers face hit her foot when she opened the door.....it was so much fun.

Find some old clothes or buy some cheap ones from a thrift store and take a peice of steel wool to them. Use it to fray the edges and seams and make the clothes look worn and dirty. Put on a pair of old shoes and leave one unlaced. Wear the unlaced shoe on an angle, giving the appearance of a broken ankle. Use brown spray paint to lightly cover parts of the costume (not too thick), making it look dirty or fresh-from-the-grave (actual dirt can be rubbed in, depending on how dirty you want to actually be). use halloween makeup to give yourself dark circles under your eyes and hollow out your cheekbones, making yourself look gaunt. some fake blood in your mouth, dribbling down your chin and some special effects contact lenses are a nice touch, although the lenses are a tad expensive.
then just muss up your hair and shuffle around the party searching for brains and groaning.
