I'm old fashioned. Before I got married, I wouldn't go on a date with someone I didn't know, but I also didn't neccesarily have to be "friends" with them. There are somany other factors that must be taken into consideration.

Someone new because if it doesn't work out, then that's two relationships down the drain and there would be more awkwardness when you see each other again if they were your friend.

Well if the friendship is strong enough, the former I think but it'd be pretty awkward..
The latter is good for some people because it's like starting new! :-)

someone new. If it's someone you know and it doesn't work out... you might still want to be good friends...then when you get with somone else they get jealous if you are still friends with your friend/old flame.
