The pagans had a celebration around this time of year called SamHain(sow-en) which according to their calender was the new year and it was believed that all the souls of those who died in the past year were given one last chance to walk the earth.

When Christianity rose, the Christians set their Holiday of All Saints Day or All Hallows Day the next day. Making the Pagan SamHain, All Hallows Evening. which through the evolution of language became Halloween.

It was a common practice in the infancy of Christianity to set Christian Holidays around the same time as Pagan Holidays to make Christianity more palatable, and easier to accept.

It started out as "All Hallowe' en" meaning to go out on Oct. 31st and celebrate the "All Hallows' Even" which by the time it was said fast enough, resulted in the name Halloween.

It's derived from the old school "All Hallows Eve" The one day the veil between the living and the dead is the thinest and the living can celebrate with deceased loved ones. It's a good thing. That's whyn so many costumes are dead people.
