I started out working on a check-out and didn't have that problem. I know slower members of staff did though, it's because everyone is in a constant bloody rush. The goverment should double our pay (an therefore the amount of tax we pay) and halve our hours. That way we have twice as many jobs available in the UK and enough time to do everything without rushing

I don't totally agree! My other half gets on well with the checkout people & my mum has given some lifts into work as she recognised them walking and she was going to the same place (the supermarket they worked in). Also I have been treated rudely by checkout ppl in the past too so I would say really I think it's 6 to 1 and half a dozen to the other' to be honest!! However I do agree that people 'class' people sometimes & as I have worked in a service industry and been treated crap, been threatened and know people who have had alot worse!! It would seem that some people think they are above and not equal to other humans. Therefore they regard you (quite wrongly) as a lower lifeform and deserve to be shunned.

Probably because they are crap themselves. The girl on the Tesco checkout at Broadstairs today was most polite, friendly and courteous and even suggested that we enjoy the rest of our weekend. It probably makes her shift go quicker and it sure made our shopping a better experience. More checkout staff should try it. Well done Tesco for employing this particular girl
The rest of you checkout staff should take note. CHEER UP A LITTLE !! Make the customers day you might not get treated like s**t

I used to work on a supermarket checkout and found this too..
But I used to have fun.. I used to beep the stuff through real quick so that they couldnt possibly keep up with packing and watch them sweat as they try to keep up.. Then ask for the money really friendly so they cant say I was being rude - nothing wrong with being friendly and efficient is there now??

I guess some people have real problems that carry over into every part of their lives and they think check out workers cannot answer back, most people are pleasant enough. if a checkout worker consistently gets bad stuff from customers perhaps it is they who have a bad attitude

Because they have never been one they should try it and than every one would know what it felt like to be a cashier. But the customer is always right no matter what. Its not the cashier they should be takening the problem out on she only works there and is told what to do go to the higher ups and make your point know and quit being a jerk!

I think is mostly vice versa as each time i go into this store i get ill treatment from the checkout staff really rude. She just moans and grans as she scans shopping.

Checkout staff should be polite and willing to help and try to make conversation even if shopper looks they have had abad hair day.

So smile it your job to.

I have no clue. Usually it's the checker who's in a surly mood, and no matter how nice and polite the customer is, they treat the customer like crap. I know one checker that when I go shopping I have a joke about ranking her attitude on any given day to my husband. I've never been rude to her at all.
