I have a four month old little girl and her chest sinks in quiet a bit. Right in the center. she has no trouble so far, as far as breathing, she seems normal. her doc says he will check her when she is two years old to see if its affecting her health but he has seen children with this before and its more of a cosmetic problem than anything, I am still concerned. Anybody know anything about this? If so is it cause for concern? Your input would be much appreciated

Like I said I have taking her to the doctor when she was around a month old and he says he cant tell if its anything to be concerned about as of right now he will no more when she gets older. It is a see saw motion...it goes in deep when she breaths

My daughter had a concave chest when she was a baby also. Like right in the center, between her nipples. It was pretty deep, and we were concerned ourselves. She is now 13 and is completely healthy. It never caused her any problems.

A baby doesn't use all of his/her muscles to breathe like we do. So they won't look the same when they breathe. If it is a breathing motion that mimics a see-saw movement, where the chest goes in and the stomach goes out, you might want to get that checked as soon as possible. Does she gasp for air? Does she have any interferance with her breathing? Does anyone smoke near the baby? Is it getting better? Her muscles will strengthen with time.

Her breast bone hasn't hardened yet. When babies are born their bones are softer..her breastbone (the bone that goes where her chest is sinking in) hasn't hardened yet. In fact, they usually aren't fully hardened until you're about 18-20 years old.
