Just don't put the dye in your washing machine! The package will say this is an OK thing to do but trust me, your whites will never be white again.

Instead I find that a big stock pot or bucket works best. Make sure you have a long stick to stir the clothes with, don't kid yourself... stir stick or not you want to wear rubber gloves and preferablly work outside.

Use a half cup of table salt to help set the colour but please be aware the dye in your newly darkened and spruced up clothes will have a tendancy to run and bleed.

Dying is a good refresher for blacks but nothing is going to have the staying power of a professional dye job.

Better yet when buying black clothes stick with synthetics and blends as cotton looks tired quickly.

Very hot water and lots of salt sets the color. I'd leave something black in the solution longer than normal, cause it will still bleed and fade a bit. Air dry it the first time. Next washing time, use really hot water and more salt....then dry it on the hottest setting your dryer has. If the dryer turns a bit dark as a result, use formula 409 or other strong household cleaner to remove the stains. There is also a washer sheet that will capture colors that are bleeding when you are washing that will prevent the colors from getting on other things in the washer. I've used these sheets many times and they have been a lifesaver.

I have not tried this myself but I heard that if you soak them in vinegar water after you dye them it helps to set the color. I would also wask them in cold water to help stop the bleeding.
