a compound always results from combination due to cheical change. the chemical properties of substances change when they undergo chemical reaction, that is donation and sharing of bonding electrons. so carbon dioxide is a compound since one carbon atom shares electrons with two oxygen atoms. a mixture demonstrates only changes in the physical properties of the mixing substances. sugar in water only makes the water sweet, but it is still just H20 mixed with molecules of sugar gone extremely tiny due to dissolution. no electron bonding. hope it helps.

By definition a compound is a substance that is made of two or more elements combined chemically. The amounts of each element in a compound is exactly the same no matter which way the compound is made.
A mixture is a substance composed of elements, compounds or both in varying amounts and not chemically combined. Many mixtures can be separated using simple physical methods (but I wouldn't like to have to separate the constitiuents of glass which is a mixture!!)

I believe a compound is something that is chemically combined and a mixture is simply two things that can be separated once again.

A compound is formed when two or more elements are chemically combined together. It It is hard to separate or break. Only one visible phase. Exact melting and boiling point.
A mixture is when two or more elements are not chemically combined. It is easier to separate or break. More than one visible phase. random melting and boiling point.

a compound is elements that have reacted together to form a new substane (CO2) mixtures contain elements that do not reacte with each other and can then be reversed getting the seperate elements back. (salt water, it can be reversed by evaporation -- get the salt and the evaporated water.
