Go as an I-Pod commercial! All you do is dress in total black, paint your face and hands black...wear white headphones and dance like crazy. Guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser.

one guy i worked with went as a slice of bread! so funny!
i would go thrift store hunting and see what you can come up with there. then you're pretty much assured no one will have exactly the same costume as you. i did this for a number of years. i did a dead 50's girl, someone from the movie flash dance, cinderella before, an old fashioned lady of the night, a vampire, and an odds & ends clown. take a look around, you'll find all kinds of inspiration. sometimes you have to go to a normal retail store to finish it out (white lipstick, fangs, clown nose, etc.) but you can find most of what you are looking for in the thrift store.
other ideas:
the rainbow (a dress with different fabrics going horizontal in rainbow colors)
medusa (green dress, black cloak, silver hair color spray and do your hair in spiral curls)
really, any goddess would be ones not often used
you could also do an 80's version of almost anyone famous who has been around that long
smurfette (blue tights, a plain white dress, make a hat out of felt, tights on your arms too - or a tight blue longsleeved shirt, some blue face paint)
it really all depends on how much you are willing to put into it - are you willing to make your own? or shop around at a few different stores? anything you find readymade in a store is going to be mass produced and a lot of people are going to have it.

go as a gum ball machine.get a huge piece of plastic and make it into a sphere around your torso.fill it w/ balloons and add a little dispenser. adorable.or use the same concept and be on of those machines that shoots out baseballs or tennis balls.

IPOD- make a white oaktag Ipod and strap it over your shouldres. Put another piece on the back. Draw the front on and the back, too. I think its graet!
