The dictionary definition of polygamy is - the practice of having more than one wife or husband at the same time. Other people may think differently but my personal opinion is that polygamy is wrong. Simply because wedding vows are a promise, and that it isn't fair to the first person you marry. If you really love them you wouldn't betray them this way.

The term polygamy (literally many marriages in late Greek) is used in related ways in social anthropology and sociobiology and sociology.
In social anthropology, polygamy is the practice of marriage to more than one spouse simultaneously (as opposed to monogamy where each person has only one spouse at a time). Like monogamy, the term is often used in a de facto sense, applying regardless of whether the relationships are recognized by the state (see marriage for a discussion on the extent to which states can and do recognize potentially and actually polygamous forms as valid). In sociobiology, polygamy is used in a broad sense to mean any form of multiple mating. In a narrower sense, used by zoologists, polygamy includes a pair bond, perhaps temporary.
Polygamy today
Those who live in their own communities tend to find their additional spouses from within their own communities or networks of like communities. In many cases, this involves daughters of polygamous families entering into arranged marriages with much older men who already have a number of wives. In some cases, a man marries a woman who has children from a previous marriage, then marries the children.
Marriage age is often young and sometimes below the legal minimum. It is also not uncommon for fairly close relatives to marry, leading to inbreeding if not incest, though part of this comes from the difficulty of keeping track of the complex net of familial relations. As there will always be an excess of male children, a significant percentage of young men are compelled to leave their home towns, and sometimes become homeless. This is only within specific religious communities.
Those who are geographically separated from other polygamists in their culture use other means to find additional spouses. Some polygamists use the Internet. Some join together with a friend.
Many polygamist families exist today that consist of only consenting adults. These families are egalatarian in nature. Many of these families live within the US also. In these families, women as well as the men hold careers and attend school. These are well educated and intelligent people who all agree to love one another and raise a family together.

The women don't have multiple husbands. It is only the men who have multiple wives. Sounds like a great and good deal for them...everyman's dream if he can keep them all happy.
Not the kind of life I'd want.

How in the hell does anyone make themselves believe that it is OK to "share" your spouse with another person in marriage and think that--that is what you deserve? I want to be the "only" one. He will be my "only" one. Polygamy is on a totally different level than just cheating. It's wrong. Horribly WRONG!

I personally think it's wrong. I think it devalues women, making them "just another option" rather than a priority. I think that goes against the meaning of "partners" and I think it's wrong to call that "marriage".
But some cultures socialize girls and women to believe that they exist to serve the male ego, to have children, and to take care of everyone.
I would never condemn a person for how they believe, but I will condemn their behavior. I don't judge people for what they think, but I do judge what they do.

well it's illegal to have multiple spouses in this country. I also think if having an affair was not taboo it wouldn't be as much fun at the start, though it's not fun when ppl get hurt either so go figure .....

In my opinion its completley wrong. How can they love completley and fully as God intends. When God had created Adam and did not want him to be alone He Gave him1 woman not a handful. Love to me is about being committed to one person and one person only. How can you say your truly committed if your sharing yourself in more than one way with someone else.

You have got to be joking - it's bad enough having one husband, could not imagine having two or more.
