Speed sensor on the tranny or differential likely defective. However, it would be wise to check the connector into the trans as they are also know to get greasy/dirty and sometimes loose connectivity. If that does not work, a new sensor is in order.

These cars don't use a speedo cable from the trany. They receive a signal from one of the wheel speed sensors from the abs. Since you don't have any other faults like an abs light on I would suspect the odometer to be the problem.
Being a 93 it's very possible that your sensor is in the rear diff. If that is the case check your connection.

Could be as simple as a FUSE...or a inner cable..this could have wear n tear break..or kink in line if youve had some one under the hood looking around..

probally a broken speedometer cable. unscrew the cabl back of your odometer, while in motion,if the inner cabl turns,the meter is bad.

instrument clusters are known to be somewhat faulty. Have it checked out at ur local bmw dealer.
