The best part about my original country (Wales) was its determination not to take itself, or anyone else, too seriously. I left in 1997, and they (just about) voted themselves an "assembly', turned a dying heritage language into a so-called "first language", and have since become utterly po-faced about their existence, and touchy if you remind them that it hasn't been this way since the dawn of time. So now, I'm afraid the best thing about my homeland is its dedication to the art of the perfect cheese on toast.

My soul has always belonged to London though, and the best thing about this place is that it's bigger and brighter and darker and danker than anyone who lives here. It breathes, and it changes and swallows you up and wherever you've come from, if you become a Londoner, you are who you are and there's no-one to tell you it's odd, or wrong, or against the rules. London is the home of original spirits - just as New York, and Chicago, and Athens and Rome and Paris are - it's the critical mass of so many people busily being themselves with all their might... That's the best part of the place I call home, even though it's not a country per se. It's somehow bigger than a country, and sepearate to itself.

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,—
This blessed plot,
this earth,
this realm,
this England.

I think that says it all :o)
