Hello,
Yes, this is quite common. It is hard enough to hear one heart beat let alone two. My OB would run that heart thingy over my belly for ever before actually hearing my twin girls hearts beating. And when we were able to hear their hearts beat, it was the coolest thing. I brought a mini tape recorder in with me and recorded the sound of the hearts beating. It was just amazing..
Hope this helps you...................... :-)

Well, 12 weeks is kind of late not to be able to hear a heartbeat, but twins run smaller than single babies so it might be OK.
I know my doctor couldn't hear my (single birth) baby's heartbeat at 9 weeks and he was fine. It just happens that my uterus is tilted somewhat deeper in the pelvis than normal so he was too far from the monitor.

If it makes you feel any better I am almost 11 weeks and the doc could not find one this week either. She said that it is completely normal and very common. It is OK, I am sure in the next few weeks you will hear one.

Yes, ultrasounds are not terribly accurate.
I think this is an important website for all women who plan on having kids to read. It helps us remember that doctors can make mistakes and we do not have to go along with what is the "standard treatment". Standard does not mean right.

Yep. My doctor couldn't hear my daughters' heartbeats until 16 weeks. Each time, she did an ultra sound so we could see the heartbeat.

yes, it is. we could't find the heartbeat for my first one until around 14 weeks. and twins are usually smaller than just one baby because they only have half the room. don't worry.
